Nasal Polyps

Nasal polypi arise from the mucosal lining of the paranasal sinuses or the drainage pathways of the sinuses. These grape-like structures fill the sinus spaces and then hang in the nose. They cause nasal blockage and may even cause headaches and a chronic post nasal drip. Early polypi may respond well to oral medication including steroids. However, the clinician has to decide if the polypi are too advanced in which case they would require ‘Endoscopic Sinus Surgery’. Even after surgery, the patients would be asked to come for periodic follow up visits and continue using a nasal spray for long-term use.

Some patients of Nasal Polypi suffer from ‘Allergic fungal’ disease or AFRS. These patients require surgery to clear out the accumulated secretions and disease from the sinuses. These patients also have a higher chance of recurrence of disease after surgery. AFRS patients need long-term follow up and medication.
